Assessing Division in Word Problem

Division in word problems are determined when the question asks for how many times a number goes into another. The function is essentially the complete opposite of multiplication. Word problems are particularly more difficult to tackle, since it requires a student to digest the information presented in context and organize the data. However, with more practice and the proper strategy to approach these questions, your kids can easily solve a word problem that involves the concepts of division.

To demonstrate how to solve a word problem, let’s take a look at the following example:

From this word problem, you will first need to identify what exactly you are looking for. In this case, the number of candies each of Peter’s friends will receive. Secondly, determine what kind of information you are given – Peter has 80 candies in total and 10 friends. Deducing from the context of the word problem, you can figure out that this question asks for how many times a number (number of candies) goes into another (number of friends). Once you have defined all your variables, you can easily solve this question by dividing 80 by 10:

Therefore, from this word problem, you will find that Peter’s friends will each receive 8 pieces of candy.
