Subtraction Problems

Kindergartners should have no difficulty solving basic subtraction problems on their own. Once kids can count up to twenty, they are ready to try their hand at subtraction. Parents can help their young ones get started on subtraction with plenty of practice problems.

Practicing Subtraction Problems

Parents who provide their children with plenty of subtraction problems for extra practice will notice that their children quickly gain mastery of the skill. As kids move on to more complicated subtraction problems at school, parents should ensure that the complexity of the subtraction problems they practice at home likewise increases. With mastery, children gain confidence about their mathematical abilities and are less likely to develop a dislike for the subject. Parents can easily find subtraction worksheets online for children of different age groups and abilities.

Subtraction Word Problems

To solve subtraction word problems, kids need to have reading and comprehension skills in addition to subtraction skills. Further, kids must be able to understand how subtraction is used in various everyday situations. Parents who use common household objects to practice subtraction with their kids help contribute to this understanding. As with basic subtraction problems, extra practice solving subtraction word problems is very useful in mastering this skill.

Starting Addition and Subtraction Problems Together

Some teachers have students master addition problems first, and then move on to subtraction problems. Other teachers find that teaching addition and subtraction together helps students understand the inverse relationship they share. Either way, addition and subtraction are closely related concepts, and once students master both, they should practice addition and subtraction problems together. This will get them used to checking the sign before solving the problem. Gradually, students will be able to draw the connection between the two processes. Similarly, children should practice addition and subtraction word problems together to be able to better understand the differences between them.
