Pre-K and Kindergarten Counting Activities

Pre-k kids are learning new skills at a rapid rate. Counting is one such skill that parents can easily teach the little ones!

Simple activities around the house can teach kids counting. Toys, for instance, are a good way to start. Collect all your child’s toys in one place, and hand them over to the child one by one, counting each one as you do so. Repeat this process till he gets familiar to listening to the numbers.

Gradually, start counting other things around the house. Candies, spoons, chairs, fingers, toes, coins, etc! Start off with small numbers, teaching them to count up to 5. Get them to repeat after you. Slowly move to higher numbers, counting up to 10, 15, 20, etc. The little ones will soon begin counting everything they can see!

Skip Counting Activities for Kids

Once kids can count comfortably, introduce them to the concept of skip counting. Teach them to count by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. Teach kids that skip counting is a faster way to count. (Skip counting will also help them when they are introduced to the concept of multiplication.)

Parents and teachers can find a wide array of counting activities for preschoolers, kindergarteners and first graders. You can also get creative and integrate counting with everyday activities in a fun way! Remember, numbers and counting are your child’s first steps in math. Make it count.
