Unit Rate Problems
Unit rate problems consist of finding the number of units for one quantity and using that ratio to understand it when used with different quantities. The easiest way to help your child understand the unit rate of a problem is to divide the problem into parts and solve for one thing at a time.
For example:
It took 7 hours to mow 4 lawns, at what rate were lawns being mowed? How many lawns could be mowed in 35 hours?
Step 1:
How much time did it take to mow one lawn?
Take the number of hours and divide by the number of lawns.
7/4 = 1.75
Each lawn took 1.75 or 1 hour and 45 minutes to mow.
Step 2:
How many lawns can be mowed in 35 hours?
Divide the total number of hours by the amount of time it takes to mow one lawn.
35/1.75 = 20
In 35 hours, you can mow 20 lawns.
